Since its creation in 1499, Michelangelo's Pietà has inspired emotion, faith, and imitation through its elegant depiction of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. It was carved from a single slab of marble, and is the only work Michelangelo every signed. He carved it when he was 24.
